Minister was doing “governmental business”, says Sarah Munby as RPN reveals major additional legal costs

The top civil servant at the science department has defended using taxpayers’ money to settle a libel complaint against the science secretary, as fresh details emerge that more than double previously known legal costs.

Yesterday, Research Professional News revealed that the government had spent more than £19,000, excluding VAT, on legal services relating to accusations made by Michelle Donelan about advisers to UK Research and Innovation.
