Risky artificial intelligence systems are being banned or constrained, with exceptions for research and innovation
New EU rules on artificial intelligence, which the European Commission is calling the “world’s first comprehensive AI law”, have now “come into force”, meaning they have a legal basis across the bloc and its member states.
EU politicians approved the AI Act last year to ensure AI systems used in the EU are “trustworthy” and respect people’s rights. It sets tiered risk management classifications for AI systems, with special allowances for research and innovation.
