My winning proposal: Drafting a first-rate first bid to the AHRC

Nigel Jeffries is his institution's first and only AHRC bidder

Top tips for first-time bidders:

  • Get colleagues or co-investigators to read through your application and make suggestions as you draft it so that the bid can evolve and be refined continually rather than just once at the end.
  • Emphasise how your research can be further developed after your project.
  • Familiarise yourself with how the actual application is constructed and the formats by which you have to upload it.
  • Look up similar successful grants to see how they stand out in terms of content and structure.

The Museum of London Archaeology (Mola) was awarded Independent Research Organisation (IRO) status in 2014 meaning that it could compete on equal terms with universities for research council funding.
