The UK Academy of Medical Sciences’ professorships scheme helps international arrivals set up shop

Top tips:

  • This scheme is unlike most fellowship or project-based schemes researchers will be used to applying for.
  • Highlight how your research vision aligns with the Academy of Medical Sciences’ broader vision and how you could become an ambassador for the organisation.
  • Do your homework on the panellists prior to interview.
  • Ensure that the letter of support from your institution is more robust than would be the case for most other schemes.

Meritxell Canals, professor of cellular pharmacology at the University of Nottingham, was one of the first four winners of the Academy of Medical Sciences’ professorships scheme, aimed at international researchers embarking on their first full professorship.
