From the archive: Beating the odds to an industrial fellowship

Royal Commission for the Exhibition of 1851 grants are not just for Russell Group applicants

Alongside its Research Fellowships and Brunel Fellowship—profiled in Funding Insight this week—the Royal Commission for the Exhibition of 1851 also offers Industrial Fellowships for early career researchers who have started an industry-focused PhD or are working in industry. The next deadline is 11 February 2021.

The commission has historically favoured applicants linked to Russell Group universities, but, as 2017 Industrial Fellow Ben Janes told Eleni Courea, that is changing. Like many former Industrial Fellows, Janes has gone on to help set up his own company since his fellowship and is now chief technology officer for imaging and artificial intelligence start-up Sechoia.
