From the archive: The new breed of agricultural engineers

Agricultural engineering is increasingly IT-focused and the Douglas Bomford Trust is keeping pace

With food insecurity from a destabilised climate an growing concern, and in spite of its small size, the work of the Douglas Bomford Trust may become increasingly important in the years ahead. This is especially true as the charity, which focuses on agricultural engineering and technology with a particular interest in sustainable food and technology systems, has a reputation for providing young agricultural engineers their first grants.

However, as Alan Plom, secretary to the Douglas Bomford Trust, explained in this article published a year ago, researchers at any stage in their careers can apply. The charity’s larger grants—worth more than £5,000—are open now with a deadline of 1 October, while smaller grants can be applied for year-round.
