My winning proposal: Get psyched up

The Experimental Psychology Society is a rare source of funding for pilot studies

Top tips

  • Do not assume greater knowledge of your specific subject area than you would for a more generalist funder
  • Similarly, you will need to explain your project’s importance in your field
  • It is expected that grants will run for no more than a year; be realistic about what you could achieve in that time
  • The application is short, so clarity is at a premium

The Experimental Psychology Society’s Small Grants are vital packages of funding for early career researchers in the field looking to kick-start a line of enquiry with empirical studies. They are open twice yearly to members, who will be mostly based in Europe.
