Our winning proposals: Discover the future

It may feel uncomfortable, but self-promotion is necessary to become a BBSRC Discovery Fellow

Top tips

  • These are individual fellowships, not standard research projects
  • The research proposed must be different from previous supervisors’ work and potentially transformative rather than incremental
  • Work on the application in blocks, understanding that a different approach is necessary for each section
  • Use space strategically; consider omitting detail on contingency plans but expect to be questioned on that omission by reviewers or the interview panel
  • Interview preparation is invaluable

As the Biotechnology and Biological Science Research Council’s specialised fellowship for helping researchers move on from their postdoctoral careers towards research independence, the Discovery Fellowships are always highly competitive.
