My winning proposal: Much more than a project grant

Potential UKRI future leaders should aim to move their field forward, not just their research

Top tips

  • This will probably be the most demanding funding bid you will ever prepare
  • It will be a team effort and require dedication
  • This is not a scheme strictly about project execution—you must look to move your field forward as well
  • That may come in the form of an idea to federate currently disparate forces in the UK research infrastructure

UK Research and Innovation’s Future Leaders Fellowships were unveiled in 2018 and were set to run for six rounds over four years. With those six rounds finished but a seventh due to open soon, the scheme looks set to become a mainstay of the UK funding landscape. The seventh round will open on 6 September and close to outline applications on 18 October, while full applications are due by 6 December.
