Sussex VC defends ‘cherished’ free speech for staff

Intervention comes following calls for Kathleen Stock to be fired over her views on gender

University of Sussex vice-chancellor Adam Tickell has promised to take disciplinary action against students found to be behind calls for an academic to be sacked over her views, stressing that staff have an “untrammelled right” to speak freely.

Tickell told the BBC’s Today programme on 8 October that the university has “legal and moral duties to ensure people can speak freely” on campus.
