A new director of fair access and new targets, but the IFS has its say

So, we have the first clue as to what the next incarnation of the Office for Students will look like. Yesterday, John Blake—head of public affairs and engagement at the academy chain Ark—was announced as the next director for fair access and participation at the higher education regulator.

He succeeds Chris Millward, formerly of the Higher Education Funding Council for England and soon to be a professor of practice in education at the University of Birmingham. Looking at Blake’s CV, you might well ask how someone with no experience of higher education since serving as president of the University of Oxford’s student union in 2004-05 is qualified for a role at the OfS.
