Universities are the ground zero of another needless culture war. How should they respond?

In a scenario that is bizarre even by the standards of the topsy-turvy world of higher education journalism, we start this Playbook with a story that we reported on yesterday but is embargoed until today. That is not because Playbook breaks embargoes but because every last detail had already been widely briefed to the Sunday broadsheets.

As Chris Parr wrote yesterday, the government is set to announce a free speech champion for universities—a tsar for all the gushers, if you will. This morning at 11am, the Westminster government will publish “proposals for a number of legal measures to strengthen free speech and academic freedom in higher education”. Fiona McIntyre brings us responses from higher education to the leaked pre-announcement.
