Full unlocking in England is postponed until 19 July—what next for universities?

“Data, not dates,” intoned prime minister Boris Johnson when first unveiling his “irreversible roadmap to freedom”. Now that the Westminster government has missed its date of 21 June for the full removal of pandemic restrictions, what does it mean for higher education?

We await news of whether Wales and Northern Ireland will be relaxing restrictions on 21 June and whether Scotland will go through with its plan to move all regions to “level 0” by 28 June. The revised date of 19 July in England is based on plans for an acceleration of the vaccine programme for the over-40s.
