Eighteen to go

It is day one of an unprecedented run of strike action in UK universities

Playbook hopes to be an invaluable resource, whether you are on the picket line or in the boardroom. Readers will be only too aware that today marks the first of 18 days of industrial action being taken by university staff in disputes over pensions and pay and conditions.

We are usually first on the picket lines to speak with those taking part. However, today’s action coincides with strikes on the railways and buses, in schools and in the civil service. Three of those four strikes would have had a big impact on who was able to get to university campuses anyway—it might be a challenge for institutions to work out who failed to show up because they are on strike and who simply couldn’t make it because of transport issues or childcare needs.
