David Isaac argues that universities should be obliged to make decisions based on socioeconomic considerations

Universities have experienced major disruption over the past 12 months and it will take a long time before things return to any semblance of normality. Things have improved immeasurably since the autumn, however, when shocking images were released of students left in halls of residence with inadequate provisions—something that should never have been allowed to happen.

While we should pay tribute to the remarkable resilience of our students in these circumstances, let’s not forget that, overall, higher education institutions have responded well to the major challenges posed by the pandemic.
