Cape Town solar scheme nets Newton prize

African projects dominated the short list

South Africa has won the 2020 Newton Prize chair’s award for research into energy solutions in informal settlements.

The winning project is led by Jiska de Groot from the University of Cape Town and Federico Caprotti from the University of Exeter in the United Kingdom. The pair win £500,000 (US$650,000) for their research.
