World Bank doubles up on Africa
The World Bank will appoint a second official responsible for its Africa activities, it announced on 1 July. The bank has split sub-Saharan Africa into two regions, both overseen by a vice-president. Hafez Ghanem from Egypt, who has been vice-president for Africa since 2018, will now be responsible for East and Southern Africa. Ousmane Diagana from Mauritania will be the vice-president for West and Central Africa. Diagana said that he will have a “strong focus on innovation, impact, and transformation”.
