Africa more affected than Europe and Americas
HIV infection is a “significant independent risk factor” for severe Covid-19 symptoms and mortality in hospitals, according to a World Health Organization study.
People living with HIV were found to be at “increased risk of severe or critical disease” caused by the novel coronavirus than HIV-negative patients. Further analysis found that HIV infection carried an increased risk of in-hospital mortality in the WHO’s African region, but not in its European or Americas regions.
