Africa steps up fight against zoonotic diseases

Inter-agency group will coordinate control efforts using ‘One Health’ approach

The African Union has created an inter-agency group to coordinate, support and evaluate Africa’s work on diseases that pass between humans and animals, so-called zoonoses.

Scientists increasingly view such diseases as the most likely sources of new pandemics. Zika, Ebola, Covid-19 and monkeypox are all thought to have originated in animals before spreading to humans.
