World ‘in trouble’ after pandemic boom in TB cases, deaths

  

Bold solutions needed to regain upper hand against old foe, conference hears

The head of a South Africa-based medical research institute has warned that the growth in tuberculosis cases and deaths during the Covid-19 pandemic is a dire warning that the world could be backsliding in its fight against this old disease.

“We are really in trouble at the moment and we need to take stock of what is happening both in the world and in South Africa with regards to the rising number of tuberculosis cases and deaths,” Willem Hanekom, executive director of the Africa Health Research Institute, told the 7th South African TB conference in eThekwini this week.
