WHO tells South Africa to fast-track traditional medicines council

Interim council was created in 2013 but is not yet fully functional

South Africa’s government should speed up the creation of a traditional health practitioners council to regulate the development and practice of herbal medicine in the country, a World Health Organization technical team has said.

The team, representing WHO’s regional expert committee on traditional medicines for Covid-19, made the recommendation after touring institutions developing traditional medicine-based therapeutics in the country last week.
