South Africa funded fewer grants last year than planned

    

Bursary targets missed by more than 100 PhDs and 2,000 postgrads in 2019-20

South Africa’s Department of Science and Innovation funded fewer postgraduate and PhD bursaries last year than planned, according to its report for the 2019/20 financial year.

The report, posted on Parliament’s website, says that the department funded only 2,991 of the 3,100 PhD bursaries it had planned to fund that year—a 3.5 per cent shortfall on its target.
