SA health economist to head global academy Covid-19 panel

Atiya Mosam will join 23-member expert group that will promote science-backed pandemic strategies

South African health economist Atiya Mosam has been elected co-chair of the InterAcademy Partnership’s Covid-19 expert group.

The IAP, an umbrella organisation of 140 science academies around the world, including many in Africa, announced the decision on 10 August.

Mosam is based at the South African Medical Research Council/University of the Witwatersrand Centre for Health Economics and Decision Science. The 23-member expert group also contains two representatives each from the science academies of South Africa and Nigeria, and one from those of Egypt and Ghana.

The group will help countries share science-backed responses to the pandemic. A reserve team of “55 leading scientists” will be available for technical support for particular countries and regions.
