Engineering academy wants “wasteful release” from dams stopped

The South African Academy of Engineering has called on South Africa’s government to “engage urgently” with Lesotho to prevent water wastage from two dams that supply the mountain kingdom with electricity.

The academy said that the “wasteful release” of water from Lesotho’s Katse and Mohale hydropower dams must be stopped. These dams are less than 65 per cent full, the academy said, while South Africa’s own Vaal and Bloemhof dams are overflowing.
