South African research in “survival mode” with no simple solutions
[SARIMA 2021] South Africa’s research institutions are facing tough times as a result of the pandemic and shrinking government science budgets, the South African Research and Innovation Management Association annual conference heard last week.
One solution to the mounting challenges, suggested by Carin Niemand from the University of South Africa on 29 October, is that of “funding coalitions”, which enable institutions to pool resources and know-how in order to be more efficient in raising and spending research funding.
