Student funding threatens South Africa’s university system

“We’re shooting ourselves in the foot”, says Blade Nzimande

Ballooning government funding for free higher education for the poor and working class is a threat to the university system, South Africa’s higher education minister has warned.

“If we fund students at the expense of the system we are shooting ourselves in the foot,” warned Blade Nzimande on 4 May during a virtual sitting of Parliament.
