Beta variant researcher to lead proposed pandemic institute

Centre will train 100 African fellows

Stellenbosch University is to establish a pandemic research institute to be led by Tulio de Oliveira.

De Oliveira will remain the director of the KwaZulu-Natal Research Innovation and Sequencing Platform (KRISP) at the University of KwaZulu-Natal. The team at KRISP sequenced the more infectious beta variant of SARS-Cov-2 at the end of 2020.
