ANU aims to quash bushfires within minutes
A research centre has been set up at the Australian National University to work towards rapid bushfire suppression. The ANU-Optus Bushfire Research Centre of Excellence has set a goal of detecting fires within a minute of ignition and putting them out within five minutes. Its short-term research goals include developing ground and aerial fire detection tools, supported by data analysis tools. Researchers also hope to harness satellite communications to get nationwide coverage. The centre was announced on 1 October and has funding for five years.
