ARC applicants appeal over preprints exclusion controversy

Most disqualified applicants have made formal appeals in preprints controversy

The Australian Research Council’s appeals committee has heard 28 appeals against the council’s controversial rule to exclude researchers who cited preprints in grant applications.

At a Senate estimates hearing on 28 October, ARC chief executive Sue Thomas said that 17 Future Fellowship and 11 Discovery Early Career Research Award applicants had appealed. The council disqualified a total of 32 applications earlier this year for including references to documents held on preprint servers, all in the field of physics, rather than using peer-reviewed papers in journals. The Australian Institute of Physics has said the references were part of standard practice in the discipline.
