Minister halts next round of research assessment exercise

Jason Clare launches Australian Research Council review and says research assessment framework must be replaced

The forthcoming review of the Australian Research Council will be “broad” and will consider “the role and purpose of the ARC within our research system”, education minister Jason Clare has said.

The review’s final form was announced at the same time as Clare ordered the 2023 Excellence in Research for Australia assessment—which assesses how well universities are using the ARC’s funds—to be halted. Era should be replaced by “a modern, data-driven approach informed by expert review”, Clare told the council.
