Pandemic and climate crises ‘underscore need for research’

Academic leaders say Australia must better support basic research and its communication

Recent and ongoing crises including the Covid-19 pandemic and climate change have underscored the importance of supporting basic research, leaders among Australian academia have stressed.

Australian Academy of Science president John Shine (pictured) told a Science Week seminar on 12 August that basic research done over decades had positioned Australia for a quick response to the pandemic, as well as the implementation of “evidence-based public health measures”.
