Science minister Ed Husic seeks fresh push for gender equality

Government monitoring suggests only tiny steps made to correct underrepresentation of women in Stem subjects

Science minister Ed Husic has called for “renewed effort” to increase diversity in science, as data was released showing highly qualified women continue to leave for other careers.

The number of women working in Stem subjects increased just two percentage points from 13 per cent in 2020 to 15 per cent in 2021, according to this year’s Equity Monitor for science, technology, engineering and mathematics, published by the federal government on 20 September.
