Awards in Australian Research Council’s latest Discovery round ‘reserved pending advice from security agencies’

The Australian government has held back funding for 18 research projects on security grounds in the Australian Research Council’s latest round of Discovery grants.

The 2021 funding announcement, made on 13 November, comprises a total of A$255 million for almost 600 projects. Among the largest grants are A$650,000 to Deakin University to develop more sustainable, safer batteries; A$764,000 to the University of Tasmania for modelling of weather patterns between the Indian and Pacific oceans; and A$660,000 to the University of Technology Sydney to develop better quantum simulators to aid industries such as drug and vaccine design.
