Universities welcome government’s proposed cybersecurity reforms but want safety measures to remain voluntary

The Innovative Research Universities group has told a Department of Home Affairs review of Australia’s cybersecurity rules that security measures for universities should remain voluntary.

In its response on 27 August to a discussion paper from the department—Strengthening Australia’s Cybersecurity Regulations and Incentives—the IRU says it supports the overall direction of the reforms but wants governance standards to be voluntary rather than mandated.
