Funders bid to upgrade French beamlines at Grenoble facility

Atomic energy agency seeks revamp shortly after synchrotron restarted following 20-month break

A group of research funders including the Alternative Energies and Atomic Energy Commission (CEA) is seeking a cash injection to upgrade the five “lines of light” managed by France at the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility.

The bid for more government funding comes just a month after the facility restarted on 25 August, following nearly two years of upgrades and refurbishments. The updates are necessary “in order to take full advantage of the performance of the new X-ray beam”, the CEA said in a statement.
