French prion research moratorium extended

Ministries order investigation following suspected CJD case, but unions demand more action

France has extended a moratorium on prion use in research until the end of 2021, pending the results of a second nationwide inspection of safety protocols in laboratories.

The decision to continue the ban, which began in July, was taken jointly by five research organisations. These were the occupational health and safety research network Anses, energy agency CEA, the National Centre for Scientific Research (CNRS), the National Institute for Agricultural Research (Inrae) and the National Institute of Health and Medical Research (Inserm).
