Report describes ‘exceptional year’ for French universities

Minister hopes that funding boost will make up for 12 months of Covid-19 turmoil

France’s annual report into the state of higher education and research paints a mixed picture but offers hope that subsequent funding increases will bear fruit in the coming years.

The report, which covers the academic year 2019-20, found that salary caps in French higher education had increased, while the number of doctoral students in the country had declined. Nonetheless, the country remains a major international centre for research, figures revealed.
