Collaborative research location will use maths to interrogate the natural world
France’s National Centre for Scientific Research (CNRS) has launched a dedicated research institute to study the role of mathematics in the response to global warming, species extinction, extreme natural events and pollution.
The Institute of Mathematics for Planet Earth (IMPT) will create mathematical models of natural phenomena and attempt to extract meaning from large masses of data, the CNRS said. Starting in 2022, a total of 10 projects will be funded by the institute, the funder confirmed.
