France to create €275m pot to help universities through winter

Fund part of planned €12 billion package to tackle energy price crisis

Sylvie Retailleau, the minister for higher education and research, has announced that the French government intends to create a €275-million fund to help universities and research institutes maintain operations in the face of rising energy costs. The fund will also distribute money to student welfare body Crous to help students pay their bills.

Retailleau announced the measures at the 27 October monthly general meeting of France Universités, an association of university leaders. She said the fund will be included in France’s 2023 budget, which is currently being debated by parliament. It will be part of a wider package of measures announced last week by prime minister Elisabeth Borne and economy minister Bruno Le Maire to help businesses and public sector organisations deal with the energy crisis.
