German universities see drop in international students

International applications drop by 20 per cent, but academics say trends will improve

The number of international applications to German universities has decreased by 20 per cent this year, according to data released by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD).

The DAAD, together with non-profit institution Uni-assist, found that less than 60,000 prospective students from abroad had applied for a bachelor’s or master’s programme in Germany by 20 August. But the organisations explained that the situation could have been worse, saying that they found the magnitude of the decrease “extremely gratifying” in light of the Covid-19 pandemic.
