Germans in favour of more evidence in politics, survey shows

Trust in scientists remains high—and internet becomes number one source of research news

More than two-thirds of Germans are supportive of evidence-based policymaking and three in four want scientists to publicly speak out if politicians ignore scientific advice, according to a survey.

The Wissenschaftsbarometer, an annual survey undertaken by a group of German science funders, found that trust in science remained high during 2021 in the midst of the global coronavirus pandemic. The pandemic even seems to have increased faith in scientific evidence: in April 2020, 71 per cent of Germans said they trusted science, but this rose to 73 per cent in 2021.
