Lack of reliable complaints procedures create “vicious cycle” of bad scientific leadership

At least 10 per cent of doctoral students have experienced bullying and harassment at their institutions, a study of PhDs in Germany has shown.

Of those who had suffered such behaviour, only one-third had reported alleged abuses of power by superiors to their institution, the study showed. Even when bullying or harassment was brought to the attention of university management, three-quarters of complainants said they were dissatisfied with how complaints were managed.
