Berlin university revokes former family minister’s PhD

Freie Universität Berlin board decides unanimously that Franziska Giffey’s thesis was based on “deception”

Freie Universität Berlin (FU Berlin) has withdrawn the doctorate of Germany’s former family minster Franziska Giffey following a review that found evidence of plagiarism.

The move was announced on 10 June after a unanimous decision of FU Berlin’s executive board. In its statement, the university said Giffey had obtained her doctoral degree by making “deceptions about the independence of her academic performance”.
