Comprehensive statistics show diverse picture of Germany’s 200,000 doctoral candidates

Germany’s Federal Statistical Office has, for the first time, published data about PhD students in Germany.

According to the statistics, 192,300 people were enrolled in doctoral programmes last year. Slightly more than half of these—53 per cent—were men, and 22 per cent had a nationality other than German. The overall average age was 30.
