Alliance backs public participation in science

Involvement of non-academics in the research process could help to meet challenges, says representative body

Germany’s Alliance of Science Organisations has pledged to actively support what it calls citizen science, by which non-academics can contribute to research projects.

The association, which represents the country’s leading science and research bodies, has issued recommendations to encourage such exchanges with non-scientists. It said that citizen science should be strengthened as an essential component of the research process, which should be anchored in the science.
