DFG and Leopoldina urge caution on dual-use issues

                             

Leading German science bodies remind researchers of ethical issues when developing weaponisable technology

Scientists should exercise caution and stick to ethical principles that go beyond the legal requirements when engaging in dual-use research, leading policy bodies have said.

In a joint statement, the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) and the Leopoldina science academy said researchers across disciplines had to ensure the results of their research were not used detrimentally. The statement, based on updated recommendations published by the two organisations, said that “researchers, by virtue of their knowledge, experience and freedom, have a special ethical responsibility that goes beyond the legal obligation”.
