Germany tops universities’ Academic Freedom Index

Assessment praises country’s protection of university debate but highlights worrying global trends

Germany has taken first place in the Academic Freedom Index, an annual assessment of global academic freedom compiled by the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg in Germany and the University of Gothenburg in Sweden.

The AFI is composed of five indicators: freedom to research and teach; freedom of academic exchange and dissemination; institutional autonomy of universities; campus integrity; and freedom of academic and cultural expression. Germany was among the leading countries in all five areas and came out on top overall.
