Analysis aims to help govern use of AI in German universities

Study by legal experts at Ruhr-Universität Bochum steers away from banning use of artificial intelligence

Text-generating artificial intelligence tools are causing considerable uncertainty at universities over issues such as authorship, according to a new analysis commissioned by the science ministry of the state of North Rhine-Westphalia.

But the analysis by legal experts at Ruhr-Universität Bochum, reported on 8 March, recommends against banning the use of AI tools. Instead, universities will have to define when and under what conditions such tools can be used, it says.
