Germany moves to keep power-hungry research fuelled up

               

Federal hardship fund will channel €500 million to energy-intensive facilities

German research institutions with very high energy needs are getting millions of euros of additional support to help them with surging power costs. 

As Europe’s energy markets continue to be roiled by the war in Ukraine and disruption of supplies from Russia, the federal government has set up a hardship fund for particularly energy-intensive research. The Joint Science Conference (GWK), a science administration body, said on 10 March that the fund is primarily intended for research institutions that receive federal funding, but high-performance computers and research vessels hosted by universities could also benefit.
