Panels being made more flexible, to encourage applications in all areas of research

The European Research Council has announced a reorganisation of its proposal evaluation panels to “tap into [the] full potential of applicants in all areas” by sticking less rigidly to disciplinary divisions.

The changes reflect the “evolving nature of disciplines [and the] critical role of interdisciplinarity”, the ERC explained on 28 May. They will come into effect from the 2021 Starting Grant funding round, but have been set out now to give applicants time to familiarise themselves with them.
